What's the difference between DENIM and JEAN?

Both names originate with the French. The word denim is an Americanization of the French name "serge de Nimes," a sturdy fabric which originated in Nimes, France. In 1864 Webster's dictionary listed the shortened English version: DENIM. Denim was traditionally colored blue with indigo dye to make blue "jeans," though "jean" then denoted a different, lighter cotton textile. The contemporary use of jean comes from the French word for Genoa, Italy (GĂȘnes), where the first denim trousers were made.

More Laundering Tips for Denim
(Courtesy of newCreationApparel. Boutique Narelle's first Denim Laundering tip list is found here.)
EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR DENIM!
  • Wash inside out in cold water.
  • Add a little white vinegar to set the color.
  • Use mild detergent and gentle cycle.
  • Don't use bleach. Denim will naturally fade when washed.
  • Air dry when possible.
  • Never wash denim with spandex in hot water unless you want a larger size - heat destroys the elasticity of spandex.
