FABRIC FLOPS
This fabric looks innocent enough, doesn't it?

I bought a length of polyester knit for NZ$2 a meter and thought I had a bargain. I noticed when I got home that it had flaws here and there. I carefully marked them and avoided them when I cut the pattern. I had soon created for myself a wonderfully comfortable, cosy winter chemise, but before the winter was out...

I noticed this.

Within a month it looked like this. It's always been laundered on a wool wash (mild soap, medium spin), and at time of writing is an impressive jungle of looped and twisted threads.

But then...

...this labour of love and desperate need...

...after two months...

...looked like this.

DOUBLE TRAGEDY
One malfunction was inconvenient, but two in the same season? Conspiracy?

A kind neighbour had given me a piece of wool tweed from her 95-year-old mother's 50-year stash. The yardage was limited, but I contrived a modest and attractive skirt out of it. That should have been the beginning of a long and faithful companionship. What let me down was the modern polyester lining. Perhaps the fabric had a flaw, perhaps it just wasn't designed to last, but after two months of continuous wear (it being my only winter skirt), I was shocked to find two gaping splits across my rear. Impossible to repair.

The skirt design features front and rear double inverted pleats, reflected in the lining, and along with interior placket reinforcement panels, the lining won't be simple to replace. Frankly, the effort didn't seem worth it if it was going to disintegrate again.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION
A friend told me her mother always uses Duchess Satin for linings. It's thick and sturdy whilst retaining that slippery quality essential to linings. The Lord blessed me with a 40% discount on all satins at Spotlight the day I went looking for this satin. Now I just have to get up the courage to chop my lovely skirt...well, the lining. The plan is to removed the lower half with the pleats, attach the duchess satin (cut on the bias) to the skirt yoke area, then join the lower half to the duchess satin.

BE WISE IN YOUR FABRIC CHOICE
When you devote a portion of your valuable, precious time to creating a unique garment, you want that garment to last. You want to feel rewarded for your effort. Here's one way to avoid feeling cheated: make sure you're working with quality fabric. Low prices don't necessarily mean poor quality, but they are a warning to be cautious.

Top 12 Tips for Thrift Store Shopping

CARRY A LIST AND/OR A COLOUR SAMPLE of what you're looking for. Be wary of being sidetracked by an apparent bargain you don't actually need.
In good lighting, CHECK GARMENTS FOR FLAWS such as rips, stains, loose stitching, snagged fabric, missing buttons, and other problems. Be aware of tag positioning -- removal of the staples may leave holes. (These labels are best removed using a staple remover.)
TRY ON EVERY GARMENT AND UNDER THE CONDITIONS YOU EXPECT TO WEAR IT (i.e. over a camisole or t-shirt). Shrug, bend, wriggle, and crouch to check all aspects of fit. When trying shoes, wear the denier of stockings or socks you would wear with them. Walk in them.
TEST ZIPPERS several times.
WEAR GARMENTS AND SHOES THAT ARE EASY TO REMOVE for try-ons, such as zipped sweaters, button-up shirts, and slip-on footwear (not lace-up boots!). Don't wear your best duds -- SaveMart is a dusty place.
BE AWARE THAT SAVEMART BUILDINGS ARE NOT HEATED OR AIR-CONDITIONED. Plan your trip accordingly.
READ GARMENT LABELS for laundering surprises and to check for extra buttons.
READ PRICE TAGS CAREFULLY. SaveMart tags are hand-written and not always neatly. Don't rely on colour codes.
DO NOT RUSH. Give yourself time to think. If you need the toilet, go, and return to your thinking unpressurized.
If the garment has flaws, consider what it will cost you in time and notions to fix it. IS IT WORTH IT?
If it isn't right and you can't easily fix it, LEAVE IT. And...

I took a hopeful spin through www.MaggieSottero.com and was utterly disappointed. Two to three years ago this Australian designer offered several fabulous, modest designs, but no longer. Every single design in their current catalogue is seriously (dangerously!) strapless.

Most of us don't have the cash to buy a designer gown for our special event. Boutique Narelle suggests that you browse the Formal and Bridal sections on the "Labels" section of the sidebar to find helpful tips on how to find a dress that's adorable and modest.

A number of these BN posts feature gowns and links from Modest By Design which is now closed . These links will still allow you to windowshop for inspiration, but their front door won't open. Early in the Spring, I started work on updating Boutique Narelle's wedding/formal promotions. Blissfully have I wallowed in images of gorgeous fabrics and dainty trims.

Not every bride has the luxury of 6-12 months to plan her wedding and shop for the perfect details (personally I'm in favour of short engagements), so do you know what colours and styles allow you to look your best? I don't expect to be a bride any time soon, but I do know of other occasions when an elegant gown might be required. When I browse formal fashion websites, I love studying the styles and accent details of the prom gowns, and I tend to be distracted by vibrant colours, but I'm learning, from my prowls, to be more discerning in what will work for me. This will simplify future shopping/sewing experiences.

The 2011 warm-season brochure that RD1 kindly sent to my mailbox featured these modest top styles.

RD1 shops are in most rural centres around the North Island of New Zealand. If you're a South Island shopper, pop into CRT and ask for a copy of their catalogue "Clobber".

My sister Sarah sent me a Clobber (kind-hearted gal) and I was impressed with the practical garments available for women through this farm supplies chain. Sarah said that the Rangiora branch had many more options than hinted at in the catalogue, which sounds promising provided you can get to a store or you have a sister/chum who can shop for you.

CRT stocks R. M. Williams ladies shirts, a brand which Boutique Narelle explored in chapters five and six of The Great Shirt Hunt [click here]. I promised a wearability update of my R.M. Williams Ashville shirt, coloured vibrant lime-green.

I can report it's my favourite shirt for everyday feel-good pleasure. For 100% cotton, it launders like a dream, and appears to be fade-resistant. I'm certain this shirt will live forever and that my purchase was utterly worthwhile.

The New York Times reports that even the youngest of girls are being targeted as consumers of cosmetics and beauty treatments. The elementary [primary school] set is showing up in trendy salons for pedicures and manicures.

The intense self-focus that many young women display and their attention to how they present themselves is affecting 6- to 9-year-olds. “We live in a culture of insta-celebrity,” Ms. Skey said. “Our little girls now grow up thinking they need to be ready for their close-up, lest the paparazzi arrive.”

Modelling Modesty: Lisa's Antique-Rose Suit

You may remember that at the end of Charmagne's Wedding - The Guests I mentioned a young lady with "the thickest cascade of straight blonde ponytail I've ever seen." I wanted to know the story of the suit she was wearing. I was delighted to receive a response from her mother, and now here is the suit for you to see. The suit and its wearer looked even better in real life.

Lisa's suit is a Frederick A design made of 100% polyester. Frederick A was a branch of Ambler and Company (Summit & Aertex), but the label has been discontinued.

Lisa and her mother found her suit at SaveMart, a huge discount store in Wanganui. There's a SaveMart Recycled Clothing Centre in every main city in New Zealand. I've encountered Frederick A before, a garment memorable enough for me to recognize the label when Lisa's mother mentioned it, so there's a chance that you could find something similarly delicious. SaveMart turnover includes thousands of garments per day, so if you had a look last month, it's worth having another look this month.

A glimpse of Suzannah Rowntree's jean skirt on the day of Charmagne Smith's wedding prompted me to inquire its origin. Delighted with what I heard, we met a week later for photo shoot and details.

Suzannah wanted a long skirt that was low-cost and warm enough for Australia's Victorian winters. Concerned that long skirts simply weren't economical, Suzannah retreated to her thinking spot to ponder. The result was an idea to buy two pairs of denim jeans and with the aid of a seam ripper and stitch maker, join the two into a skirt. She loves the result and has made several this year.

If you need a practical, hard-wearing skirt, or you're keen to get that trendy denim look, if you shop secondhand (thrift), and are comfortable with a little sewing, this is an ideal solution for you. Make sure you check Suzannah's tips for what style jeans will work best.

One piece of advice from me: beware of distressed denim. Watch out for the artificially faded patches because the designers carefully set them to draw the eye to thighs and buttocks. That is not what a modest lady aims for in her dressing habits, so take care in your choice of fabric and its placement. If in doubt, ask someone to view you modelling the jeans across the room. Check both front and rear views.

While chatting with Suzannah, I noticed the charm of the buttons on her hand-knitted wool cardigan. They're called Dorset Buttons and are created using a ring (Suzannah used a flat metal washer disk), yarn, and a yarn needle.

Waiting for the Bride

The eldest and the youngest ladies in this pew caught my attention for their celebratory colours amid a sea of black and grey. I encountered the elder lady twice in the course of Charmagne's wedding week and both times her hair was carefully styled in a French coronet braid with a pink camelia peeking over her brow.

One day that could be me.

Demonstrating the ease of turning an ordinary outfit into something special: feminine colours, a layer of dainty fabric, and simple accessories (see her hair and footwear).

What makes a wedding the social event of the season? Girls get to natter, or girls get to dress up, or girls get to see and natter about how other girls dress up?

Suzannah Rowntree's ethnic-style shawl immediately captured my attention. When I asked for its story, she said that it came from her favourite Asian shop in Victoria, Australia. It makes an attractive modesty-layer for her white crewneck tee. If it is her denim skirt that has captured your attention, I can tell you that she made it herself from two pairs of jeans, and next week's post will explain exactly how she did it.

Clare and Samalah looked distinctly individual and made it look easy to achieve their casual elegance. Both chose velveteen skirt fabric topped with a tailored jacket, but their combinations of texture, trims, and accessories produced very different effects.

My mother commented on the unusual number of children present at this wedding. It was charming to have them there, and to realize that they were watching and learning from the culture-leading, modest proceedings just as I was.

You've seen the faux-leather jacket before [MM Love Those Leathers], you've seen the mermaid skirt before [MM Christmas Carol], but you might like the above combination better than in the "Love Those Leathers" Modelling Modesty post. A reader protested that the jacket just didn't go with the black skirt! What do you think?

The melon cotton knit cardigan has three-quarter sleeves. The shoes are synthetic oxfords, made extra comfortable by inserting leather insoles from another pair of shoes. Top and shoes were both purchased from The Warehouse.

I'm glad to say that the standard of male dress (and posture) was not generally what you see behind me.

As always at functions like this, there were many interesting people I didn't get to talk with or photograph. One photo I very much wish I could share with you would be of a young lady diligently serving the guests. She had the thickest cascade of straight blonde ponytail I've ever seen, and she wore an antique rose/lavender skirt suit of what looked like embroidered silk. I would love to know the story of that outfit. Where did she get it? Perhaps if she or her mother read this post, they will be willing to share those details with us.

Charmagne's Wedding: The Bridesmaids

While it's true that the bride is the primary interest for spectators, the bridesmaids provide a foreshadowing and stimulate excitement for what is coming. Charmagne's bridesmaids looked and acted like princesses.

Behind the scenes nine days before...

A friend sewed the organza and silk gowns for little sisters Kaitlyn and Grace. Charmagne created older sister Genevieve's silk gown accented with organza.

Six year old Grace took courage in the name of Jesus and sparkled with joy rather than fear as she led the bridal party up the aisle.

Kaitlyn bore herself with charm and dignity as she ensured the bride's train was kept free from the wheels of her father's stand-up wheelchair.

Hair Flair

Genevieve as always adorned the proceedings with her gracious loveliness.

After greeting their guests outside the church and mingling around the horse-drawn carriage for a short period, the bride and groom suddenly set off on foot down the road for photographs in the city square, stopping traffic movement and starting public tongues wagging. Some passers-by even had their cameras out. This couple clearly like to give surprises, for this wasn't the only one that day.

Mother of the bride Barbara appeared calm and beautiful, her garments cleverly coordinated with her daughters. She usually wears her pretty hair loose, but on this occasion she had it rolled at the sides and coiled at the nape of her neck, similar to Gracie's, an elegant finishing touch for her modish outfit.

I observed in the ladies of the bride's family a noteworthy contrast to cultural norms. If cosmetics were used, it was to invisibly enhance, not to draw attention to its presence for its own sake. The girls and women all looked their delightful best and yet normal, natural individuals.

When the prevailing culture advocates artificiality, it takes courage and conviction to be different and be real. Do you wear makeup? Is it to enhance, or to attract attention? I recently watched an interview of a bunch of guys trying to help each other understand women better. When the question came up, "Why do they wear SO much makeup?", their collective, passionate response was, "They don't wear it for us, they wear it for each other!" Examine yourself, asking, Why do I wear makeup?

There are several facets to this (face-inating) topic and a primary one is the consideration of were you taught how to apply it so you look natural, or did your teacher favour the "Look, I'm wearing makeup!" style? Perhaps, like me, you didn't have a teacher at all and are struggling to acquire skill in product choice and application. If this is you, my recommendation is that you find a lady in your church or community, or even through online networks, who presents herself in a manner that you respect, then ask her if she would be willing to mentor you in the skills of modest femininity.

The week prior to the wedding, Charmagne demonstrated the niftiness she used to ensure Genevieve and baby Evangeline would be modest and comfortable throughout the day. The empire waistline on the maid of honour's dress has a hanging band...

...which lifts up to give access to invisible zips, one set each side of centre front, allowing its maternal wearer to look elegant and minimize the fuss of uncovering to nurse baby throughout the day.

Further ease is provided by a hook and eye, and functional buttons front and back. The sash band is, from the side seams, detached and fully adjustable for motherhood's fluctuating dimensions, since the dress was made two months before the original wedding date. Charmagne's Wedding: The Bride

I have so many wonderful wedding photos at my fingertips that I don't know where to start, so I'm asking myself, What will readers want to see first?

The Bride. Of course.

Here is a first glimpse, but I have to say before we continue how extraordinarily moving, joyful, and glorious this wedding day was. You might say that every wedding is amazingly special and full of joy, but it seemed to me there was an extra measure of something upon this occasion.

It was a great relief not to be faced with ANY bared bosoms, but that wasn't it. The bride and groom glowed with their love for one another and excitement in plighting their troth, but that wasn't it either. The best I can summarize it is that the hand of the Almighty was upon every detail of this day, and this was continually and publicly pointed out by those in attendance.

Why would the LORD God especially pour out His blessing on this wedding? I suggest because the hearts of the bride and groom and their parents have for a long time been devoted to loving Jesus Christ above any other. They have been willing to change the way they live in order to glorify God foremost. I saw this reflected in many small details. As the Scripture says, "...Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments," and, "By their fruits ye shall know them."*

No, your eyes are not playing tricks. It is a literal cheese cake. The bride and groom addressed the cheese according to tradition, then it was whisked away by...actually, I didn't see who the whiskers were...and sliced for the guests to enjoy with their soup, breads, and meats.

When Charmagne showed me her almost-finished gown the week prior to the wedding, we discussed the pros and cons of many small buttons, which I remembered were a feature of the dress that Erin Mallon wore at Genevieve's wedding [see here for BN photo]. We agreed that small buttons, tiny button loops, and nervous/hurried fingers were not a good combination. But Charmagne has a trick or two up her sleeve.

You can have the look without the fuss. Insert an invisible zip and stitch a row of pearl buttons along one edge. No-one will know the difference (unless we tell them).

Here's another trick Charmagne learned from her sewing mentor. Stitch wide elastic straps into the side seams and afix clasps which fasten at the back when the dress is worn. The straps will support the dress and take the pressure off the zip. This is a wise precaution. My sister experienced as a bridesmaid the trauma of a zipper ripper during the reception. She stood with her back to a wall until the well-prepared chief bridesmaid was alerted to her distress and fetched safety pins and a shawl.

If you want a low neckline, it's essential to ensure it won't gape as you move. Charmagne designed a panel behind the embroidered satin bodice, joined to the satin on three sides but separate at the top. The top edge is banded with elastic. You can see in this image that it is slightly gathered when the dress is not being worn. The upper edge is trimmed with a netting ruffle. When the dress is worn, all that can be seen is a hint of ruffle behind the satin center panel.

Another secret to preventing The Great Gape on a square neckline is to stitch one end of a strip of elastic to each corner of the neckline and the other to the corresponding side seam under the bust. These bands were hidden between the silk outer and the cotton lining, so I wasn't able to snap an illustration of this. The bands provide a subtle downward pull and thus keep the fabric close to your body.

Have you ever seen an old newspaper column detailing community social events? Weddings were plum topics for dissection. What the bridal party wore was described in meticulous detail. Charmagne's sister and matron of honour, Genevieve de Deugd (a founding member of Boutique Narelle), has provided this post-wedding savour for us via her family's website.

"I haven’t seen any of the wedding photos but I hope that some will capture the beauty of Charmagne’s wedding dress. It was a spectacular production. Charmagne designed and drafted the pattern and executed the dress in such a short time. It had a square neck, cap sleeves, princess lines at front and back.The dress was fitted around the bodice and then flowed out over a netted underskirt and ended in a curved train at the back. The skirt split at the front up to waist level to reveal a gathered netting fabric underneath. The split and train were all bordered by a braid containing a hint of gold. The dress itself was a white silk. The netting was curtain fabric – a hallmark in everything Charmagne creates. It always contains curtaining somewhere! Charmagne utilized a gold and crystal broach at the top of the split and sewed gold and crystal beads over the front of the dress in a spray pattern from the broach. It was all absolutely beautiful!"

The bride shows her delight in her creation, her labour of love for her bridegroom.

The bodice panel and sleeves were fashioned from a narrow border of embroidered satin lace which Charmagne purchased from Bryan Gaskin Fabrics.

She used the hoop petticoat she created for her sister Genevieve's wedding. She wanted more fullness than Genevieve had, so she added an extra layer of net between the hoop layer and the existing net frills. At the hem, there are 4 layers of fabric, plus the polyester overskirt (lining fabric, for that little bit of rustle).

The wire that makes the 'hoop' is inserted in the hem of the white underlayer.

How to Be Ready for the Wedding

I'm so excited. I'm going to a wedding this weekend!

Do you love weddings? I do, especially if its one that demonstrates the beauty of purity and the rewards of waiting.

This wedding features a lady who didn't date around. She waited patiently on the Omniscient Matchmaker and meanwhile got busy serving the LORD. Tomorrow will be a day full of love and rejoicing and many, many smiles (when this couple are together, they don't seem to stop smiling!).

Charmagne has been making herself ready for her beloved. Last week she generously granted me a preview of the wedding gown she designed and created. She will be radiant and glorious for her bridegroom. Yes, I took photos, and no, you can't see them, yet. =)

Charmagne's Titus 2 Evening

On Monday, I attended Charmagne's pre-wedding event which her family calls a Titus 2 evening. Based upon the Biblical injunction of Titus Chapter 2 for older women to teach the younger women to love their husbands, the evening wasn't about gifts, silliness, or entertainment. Each of the married or widowed women present spoke a word of encouragement or exhortation, sharing from their experience, successes and failures, humour and pathos. Some shared a poem, many chose Scriptures, several prayed. What a validation and benediction to the bride, and a wonderful way to set the tone for the week's celebrations. It was certainly a better preparation for marriage than the typical hens night.

Preparing a Wedding Garment

The Bible frequently mentions weddings. Does that surprise you? The LORD God invented marriage and romance, and it's clear He likes talking about it.

I'm attending Charmagne's wedding as a guest, which means I need a wedding garment. This reminds me of the warning Jesus gave that if we want to be admitted to His wedding feast, we need to wear "a wedding garment"*. Don't be fooled into thinking you can choose your own spiritual outfit for this momentous occasion, that the LORD is not particular and anything will do. He IS particular. Make sure you're ready, wearing the garments that He has approved!

I'm writing this with a bunch of sweet violets smiling up at me from a tiny vase on the table. Someone on Monday night (I didn't discover who) brought a bucketful of posies as gifts for the ladies who attended. I've never smelled real violets before, let alone had my own posy. These illustrations are my way of sharing the delight with you.

I recently saw photos of a bride wearing red, a shocking contrast to the wedding images we're used to. It reminds me of Isaiah 1:18, "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow..."

The meaning of white is further explained in Revelation chapter 19. It speaks of the marriage of the Lamb [Jesus Christ], and "his wife [betrothed] has made herself ready". Verse 8 says, "And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints."

Did you know this is the source of the bride-wore-white tradition? The marriage of a man and a woman is designed by God to reflect the relationship between Jesus Christ and His Bride.

Knight on a White Horse

We are powerless to achieve this gorgeous, spiritual wedding gown through our own creative efforts. Truthfully, we get very creative in trying, don't we? We have so many variations on "I'm a good person!" Isaiah 64:6 says, "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away*."

*Every time we break one of the The Ten Commandments.

The good news is that Jesus Christ will rescue those who call on His name and trust in Him to save them. He is the original, eternal Knight on a White Horse. He will make sure that His Bride is undefiled, without spot or wrinkle, glorious and beautiful.

Here's a humourous example of how labels can be misleading. Most of us read what we think they mean, not what they actually say.

Last time I shopped at SaveMart, I collected several tops with green labels (there are at least 3 other label colours; I haven't figured out their code yet). The prices were handwritten, quite roughly, and I thought they all said $6.99 . Can you guess what my mistake was?

A family member urgently needed a toilet stop, which this SaveMart doesn't provide, so I left the dressing room in a hurry and purchased without reviewing my selections. That $16.99 wasn't worth what I got for it.

A Public Expression of Modest Femininity

Do you think they've achieved that goal in this photo?

I love meeting people who are courageous and content in modesty. I've been remotely-introduced to these happy, beautiful young ladies whom a TV channel finds interesting enough to make multiple programs about and whom viewers find fascinating. The American family have also published two books which I found to be complete page-turners.

"The Duggars: 20 and Counting"* recounts some of the questions asked by viewers about the way the girls dress, and includes answers from the Duggar parents or their daughters.

Q: Do your daughters always wear long dresses? Why?
A: First, we want to stress that this is our family's practice. We don't put our conditions on other people or tell others what they should wear. Our standards of modesty are based on personal prayer and Bible study. We want to attract others' interest to our faces and our character, rather than to our bodies. For us, that means long pants for the boys and long skirts for the girls and no low-cut tops. Amazingly, some of our older children have developed stronger convictions about dress standards than we have.

This resource link answered a question I'd been longing to ask the Duggar girls: What is that garment you're wearing under your t-shirts?

After studying photos of the way the girls dress, I deciphered that they have access to a layering garment I've never seen in New Zealand or in any online store to date. It has more shoulder coverage than a camisole. It has a crew-neck like a t-shirt, but no sleeves. Its hem is at hip level, so it's not a tee-neck/dickie/modesty panel.

You can purchase them from www.christopherandbanks.com or plus sizes sister-store www.cjbanks.com. The store calls the garment a tank, but it's quite unlike the tanks available here which are nothing more than glorified singlets. My description is a sleeveless crewneck tee.

Wearing two layers of cotton knit won't be a comfortable solution for hot climates (or those that have summer without air-conditioning). It's a wonderful modesty fixer for mild climates, and it might mean you can wear those pretty blouses made of sheer fabric.

Modelling Modesty: Love Those Leathers

If you have a long sleeve t-shirt with a low neckline, you can fix this with a coordinating short sleeved t-shirt as Narelle has done below. You can use a contrasting colour, but be aware of two things: you don't want the under layer to look like underwear, and you don't want the contrast to draw attention to your shape -- i.e. sleeve hems level with your bust line.

Narelle usually goes for simple, uncluttered designs, so she surprised herself by choosing this printed t-shirt. She likes it because the print hides any hint of nipple, and the gold leafing and studs outlining butterflies are a la mode. One piece of modern styling can bring a whole outfit up to date.

Now add leather. Okay, so it's imitation leather, but oh baby, I feel good!

Billabong handbag and bonny boots complete the look. [Are you shocked we mentioned a label?! It was purchased on clearance and it's more durable than previous bags of higher price and greater obscurity. We all love a good buy, don't we?]

Below is a closeup of the skirt design. The lightly gathered flounce is attached to the lining. A pleated panel and split have been set into the side front seam.

Bare Bosom Teacher? No Thank You!

When Frances* retired from teaching, she became a student again, learning to play the cello. She loved her teacher Marie's skill and knack of inspiring her. She also appreciated her ladylike standards.

After two years' collaboration, Marie announced the bad news. She would soon be moving to another city. Frances and the other students would have to find a new teacher or else travel 5-6 hours per lesson.

Shortly after this devastating news, Frances attended a regional cello day attended by 45 cellists and their teachers. Frances used the opportunity to survey the one teacher who would live closer than Marie. She was not happy with what she observed and came home with the despairing conviction that she would have to travel for lessons.

What do you think it was that swung her opinion against the teacher? Any guesses? It was something that would be easy to fix and yet seemed insurmountable. The teacher was sharing with the world a vast expanse of her bare bosom.

Frances shuddered at the thought of the woman leaning over her to correct her finger positions or bowing technique. She did not need that distraction.

She remembered Marie's other students in search of a teacher. Would the parents of the several 11 and 12 year old boys be happy with their sons studying bare breasts along with their music?

Getting into the maestro mood

Sharing the joy of music with people who had never seen or heard a live cello

Wondering what to do about preventing public eyefuls? Set an example with your own dress, by being consistent in this, then share with other women what immodesty does to the men we profess to care about.

Cello teacher Marie has grimaced over a particular high school who would not permit female students to change out of their A-line uniform skirt into sports trackpants for cello lesson and so they have to hike their skirt way up in order to get their cello between their knees.

What should a modest girl wear when playing cello?

I've viewed footage of world renown cellist Jacqueline du Pre', of actress Emily Watson who played du Pre in the biopic "Hilary and Jackie" (I do not recommend the movie), and of Keri Russell who plays fictional Lyla Novacek in the movie "August Rush". These concert cellists wore full skirted dresses, usually floor length but sometimes knee length, which allowed them to get their knees apart but still kept them covered.

We don't all wear an evening gown when we make music, so how do we handle our everyday situations?

Marie recommends that her female students wear dress trousers, and was stunned to learn that Frances doesn't own any. This is because her shape doesn't make this sort of trouser a comfortable option. She usually wears skirts, but she discovered that her petticoat created a problem. Her solution is to choose skirts made of non-cling, non-transparent fabric and to remove the petticoat before playing cello.

Whether you play cello or some other instrument, or make music with your voice, take a pause and consider: Is my appearance as well as my music to God's glory and man's benefit? If it isn't, what do I need to change?

Undercover: The Right Bra for the Job

Here is a page from Bendon's official leaflet on what you should know about getting the perfectly fitting bra. Boutique Narelle explains the leaflet in illustrated detail in Bra Has Fit in Dressing Room (or, What I didn't know about getting the right bra size).

The rest of the leaflet advertises various bra types, but it doesn't tell you which bra is right for what job.

I recommend that you start by getting the right fit, and then if that doesn't provide sufficient support for your activity, ask for advice at a lingerie store that provides fitting attendants. You may need extra support, better ventilation, or a smoother shape. There are bras designed specifically to provide you with these things.

Apart from the right fit and appropriate style for your chosen activity, there's one other factor that will affect your modesty: the colour you choose. If you're wearing a sports uniform, make sure your bra is the same colour as your shirt, or one that won't attract attention to itself through the fabric. Where modesty is concerned, the more invisible the bra the better.

If you're like me and don't have the income to pair a particular bra with a particular outfit, you'll want your bra collection to be in adaptable colours. If you're dark-skinned, this may mean you need to choose black, navy, or nude coloured underwear. If you're light-skinned, you may need to choose white, ivory, or nude coloured underwear.

The pretty colours that catch our eye in the lingerie store are most often worn by women who want to attract attention to their body. If your aim is to direct attention to our face, flamboyant lingerie won't be useful to you unless it's covered by opaque fabric. If you need modest and adaptable underwear, go for neutral shades.

Female upholstery doesn't come cheaply. Ensure you get the longest life out of yours by following these tips in Caring for Your Bras.

Bra Lingo

Underwire Bra: has a wire built into the underside of the cup intended to lift, separate, shape, and provide additional support for your breasts. They're not famous for their comfort or health properties, and you may not need any of these shaping or support aids, so if you're not sure, ask the fitting attendant if it's the right style for you.

Soft Cup Bra: a bra without an underwire. Use the tips in this BN article to find out what kind of cup connector is right for your shape.

Sports Bra: provides additional support to breasts during physical exercise; is not limited to lively activity. Sturdier than typical bras, sports bras minimize breast movement, alleviate discomfort, and reduce potential damage to chest ligaments. A front-closing style with a compression, seamless cup is often worn by women following breast surgical procedures. (Tip: You'll need a comfortable, supportive bra to wear immediately after breast surgery. Hospital staff won't necessarily tell you this. Minimizing drag on the stitches reduces pain levels.)

Shelf-Bra: a close-fitting camisole or cropped tank top made of stretch knit. The bust is lined with a layer held under your breasts with a band of elastic.

Stretch Undershirt or Camisole: extremely comfortable because it doesn't press or alter your shape; provides an extra layer under transparent shirts. The shape of your breasts and how your nipples respond to air temperature will depend on whether this garment meets your modesty requirements.

Should We Let the Show Go On? (Part 2)

Continuing from Part 1 of "Modesty in Theatrical Productions"

One of the first dance theatricals I witnessed was in the final concert of a creative Christian youth conference my brother attended. I don't remember the creative outpouring that he was involved with, but I do remember a bunch of girls who depicted a "good morning, time to wake up" scene, spread around the stage perimeter slumbering in their sleeping bags. Birds chirped, the sun rose, and they awoke and flitted and floated around the stage to this song:

Thank you, Lord, for such a beautiful day.
It reminds me of the love you gave to me.
I want to reflect your love to the people that I meet.

In a scene like this, would you expect the actors to be wearing pyjamas or nightgowns? That's what 12-year-old Narelle expected to slide out from all those sleeping bags. But no. What came out? Shiny neon unitards. My enjoyment of the song was spoiled as I pondered the bizarreness of it.

Nina Donkin and the crew of "Psalty and the Take-Your-Time Machine" ensured that the costuming told the story and kept the cast modestly covered.

Tips for Choosing What You Wear on Stage

First, is it appropriate? Does it tell the story?
Second, is it modest? What does it look like from where the audience is seated?

Then you can get more specific...

Will you be seated on stage?

Keep your knees together!
Does your hem come below your knees when you're seated?

If at all possible, do not sit directly facing the audience. Remember that lounge style seating shortens your hem more than dining chairs do. If you're required to sit on the floor, practice getting up and down without exposing yourself. There are ways to do this that are modest and elegant. Have someone sit in the audience to tell you how you're getting on. I recommend sitting with your knees together, turned sideways. If you're sitting on steps, turn your knees sideways.

If you're dancing, wear layers that keep you covered when you're flapping your legs about. Bulkiness created by piles of petticoats actually looks really good on stage.

If you're spinning, test that the fullness of your skirt is not so great that it reveals as much to the audience as it would without the skirt (but with more titillation). Again, if fullness is required, petticoat layers are brilliant.

If you don't want bulk, another trick is to weight the hem by sewing lead pellets into it (or anything similarly small and heavy) and applying a rim of gathered netting to the hem of the skirt lining.

Check that your movement doesn't expose your bosom either by the neckline drooping or the sleeves gaping.

Check that your movement doesn't expose your midriff. If the shirt is tucked in, ensure it will stay tucked in. If it's an overshirt, ensure that it's long enough to keep you covered when you raise your arms.

If at any point you are backlit, check that your outfit is opaque.

I close with an anecdote warning of when the telling of the story overpowers appropriateness.

A Christian teacher who supported modesty at school won the part of Mrs Potiphar in a theatre production of "Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat". I hoped she would give the role a decorum that had not been present when I saw a high school production of it. I heard that she wasn't happy with how tight her costume was, but I wasn't prepared for the full revelation. She sashayed on stage in a gold lycra coccoon that left little to the imagination and earned for her the drooling accolade of 'svelte and sexy'.

I wonder what reasons she gave herself for portraying this role and dressing in this manner. It tells the story? It's only acting? At least I'm covered?

Remember that our Creator does not excuse 'any means toward an end'. He has given us a standard, and He promises to judge each of us for every thought, deed, and intention of our heart. Ask yourself: "Will the Lord Jesus Christ be honoured by the way I am dressing? Am I seeking to please Him in everything I do?" I urge you to let this be your guideline.

When they say "Let the show go on", let it mean for us not that we continue to show our bodies to the world, but that we are displaying the glory and beauty of Christ through our humble, gracious conduct.

Should We Let the Show Go On? (Part 1)

For much of known history, theatre productions have been synonymous with immodesty. There's no good reason for this, so I was delighted to witness a production that paid great attention to modesty, ensuring that all cast members, especially the girls, were modestly covered and yet still had freedom of movement for their active roles.

Nina Donkin and the crew of mainly teenagers produced "Psalty and the Take-Your-Time Machine" during the last week of May, giving four shows in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

The show was fun, the cast superb, and the visual display at every stop on the time machine was interesting and attractive. The dances were graceful, charming, and modest.

I remember the last time I danced on stage without adequate clothing. I took ballet classes until I was 14, then switched to tap. I didn't gain much skill with this because I was inadequately shod, but I liked one thing very much. No leotard was required. I could wear clothes for lessons.

The second year of my tap studies, the teacher planned a production featuring all branches of her dance school. Suddenly I found myself required to trot out on the town hall stage to "Singing in the Rain" wearing black shiny leggings and leotard and a sparkly waistcoat and bow tie. The costume choice didn't make any sense to me. Who goes walking in the rain with an umbrella and a leotard??

I thought, "Well, that's not so bad. I am all covered," but I didn't feel comfortable about it.

Later that year, I showed to a group of friends a photo of myself in the "Singing in the Rain" number. A guy friend looked at it and exclaimed, "Oo-oowh."

He wasn't being facetious. It was his natural reaction to the way I was dressed. I was ashamed that I'd provoked this in him and decided there and then, "No more."

The next time I performed on stage, it was my own item and I chose my costume, which was attractive, colourful, and didn't call attention to my shape.

Applying a second skin of fabric does not make you modest. Modest covering means concealing your body's shape. This can be done with flexibility, style, and visual delight, as Nina and her team amply proved in the Kids Praise show.

The "Psalty" scene that had the greatest impact on me was set in Solomon's Temple. A group of robed priests emerged and congregated stage right, opposite Psalty and the children in the time machine. Five young women wearing belted white robes and carrying glass lamps walked sedately out to form a line across the back where they swayed and gestured to the music. Centre stage, a girl danced a praise song to the Lord wearing a white pleated skirt with a skinny gold tie belt fastened around her waist, and a v-necked metallic knitted jersey over a black tee. The whole effect was stunning and very beautiful as she moved under the lights.

In the dressing room after the show, Debbie Donkin explains to Narelle the history of the Solomon's Temple outfit. Daughter Nina found in Debbie's wardrobe the sparkly jersey her mother had knitted and asked if the costume department could borrow it.

Nina says, "We wanted modesty to be a big part of this production and are thrilled that it actually ended up the way we had planned it. Having participated in many productions myself, in which the word modesty didn't exist, it was wonderful to be able to have a modesty code for rehearsals and for the show itself. Hopefully people will get lots out of this article and will try to keep their own shows modest, too!"

Loop scarf around your neck so both ends hang down the front, one tail longer than the other.

Take the longer tail and thread it inside the loop.

Take the longer end up under the opposite tail and pull it through the loop.

Pull the tail down and wriggle gently until it all sits where you want it.

I walked to RD1 twice today because the first time my camera forgot to take its memory along. I didn't mind because the day was a balmy slice of summer in late autumn after the first big drop of snow on the hills and two days of hurricane.

I agree the view is stunning, but we can linger longer when we return. The point of this trek is a modest shirt check, so let's pop in to this shop for a squizz at their tops.

I walked into the barnlike space of RD1's farm supplies store to see the faces of six staff behind the counter and in the office space beyond it staring at me expectantly. I guess it's not every day they see in their store a woman wearing an ivory wool coat and ankle length corduroy skirt. [Note: The day got progressively warmer so camera action took place when I was minus gloves, coat, and hat.]

There were no other customers in the store to distract the staff. I figured I'd better say something to explain my presence. A wooden dog house stood between me and the counter. I brushed my fingers over the sandpaperish surface of the roof and commented, "I need one of these. It's too noisy in the house."

They grinned, and I was excused to explore the clothing department.

I venture on an expedition to Farmlands (NZ) about once a year. Last time the result was a promotional featuring the Butterfly Shirt by http://www.outbacktrading.com/*. This month I compared long sleeved shirt styles from RM Williams with what I'd seen in the RB Sellars catalogue (featured last week).

*Farmlands no longer stock OT womenswear. RD1 has a small selection.

I decided to purchase the RM Williams Ashville Shirt. It cost me NZ$80 when I could have had something similar from RB Sellars for nearly half the price, but I had three reasons for buying locally.

1) I prefer to try before I buy. I tried 3 sizes and checked for sleeve length (I have unusually long arms). I bought a size smaller than I normally would.
2) I wanted to be sure the colour worked for me.
3) I was able to compare a half-placket shirt (similar to the RB Sellars featured Workshirt) with the full-placket Ashville shirt and decided I preferred a full placket.

The Ashville looks similar to the Sandy Workshirt with identical collar and breast pocket shaping. The Ashville adds a little class with contrast collar and cuff lining in navy stripe, a button tab on the sleeve for rolling the sleeve up, and contrast-stitched buttonholes in navy. The Binalong Shirt is exactly the same styling as the Ashville and offers 3 colours of stripe or check minus the contrast features.

I didn't find the RM Williams webstore easy to navigate and I couldn't find an enlargement option (unless it was the camera in the bottom corner which did nothing when I clicked it). There's more detail in the catalogue, which you can download or view online (or if you've got a Farmlands (NZ) or RM Williams (Aus) store in your town, pop in and ask for a catalogue), but it's not set up like a ladies clothing store with garment description and close-up views.

Other shirt styles include the Broken Hill and plain Work Shirts (half placket), and the semi-fitted Willalooka and Bathurst shirts in check or plain with smaller chest pockets than the Ashville and Work Shirts. All but the plain (Brigalow) shirts have roll-up sleeve tabs. If sleeve tabs annoy you, unpick the stitching and remove the tab and button.

RM Williams shirts don't offer as many buttons on the placket as RB Sellars do, but for a small chested person like me that's not a problem. I like the double-buttoned cuffs, allowing for more wrist space if I've got layers underneath or want to push the sleeves up without undoing the cuffs.

You can order from the RM Williams website, or if you prefer to try before you buy, see the Store Finder for RM Williams womenswear stockists in Europe, the UK, South Africa, and the USA, as well as Australiasia.

In New Zealand, the most common RM Williams stockist is Farmlands in the North Island and CRT in the South Island. Some merino options are available at CRT online, but at the moment the online shirts are all menswear. You can view what's available in South Island CRT stores by asking for the Clobber Magazine at your local farm centre.

Are you wondering why I would pay NZ$80 for a shirt when I could get a button-up shirt from Ballentynes, Farmers, or the Warehouse for $40 to $60?

This shirt...

buttons from pelvis to collarbone;
is opaque and has breast patch pockets, meaning in the heat of summer I can go bra-less;
has long sleeves. Most fashion stores have stocked mainly 3/4 length or cap sleeves for several years now;
is designed for working comfort whilst retaining style. There's room to move but it fits me well without hugging my figure;
is quality cotton that shouldn't fade. (I'll let you know how that goes.) I've noticed that Ballentynes poly-cotton shirts fade very quickly;
will last a long time. It is very well made. No loose threads or buttons such as are often found on Asian-made garments;
I loooooooove the colour! No other store in this country has offered me this colour this century!

The Power of Knowing What You Want

How creating a portfolio will simplify your shopping.

Have you ever opened a clothing catalogue and exclaimed, "That's it! That's me!"

I did this when I opened the current Ezibuy catalogue. A two-page spread featured a skirt, top, belt, and jacket that were exactly the style in which I feel modest, feminine, elegant, and comfortable. The colours aren't what I look my best in, but yes, the silhouette and simple detail are definitely me. How rare it is to see on one page a complete outfit I'd be willing to purchase!

I didn't purchase in this case because I'm stocking my wardrobe with clear, strong colours, but I did take a photograph of the spread (so you could see it) and cut out the pages for my Portfolio.

What is this portfolio? You may have noticed that one of the topical categories on the sidebar is labelled Portfolio. I stopped applying the label to posts because it fitted nearly every post. Faced with the rarity of modest clothing in stores, it's surprising that when we do see a modest garment, it can be hard to tell if it's something we'll enjoy wearing or that'll look good on us because we have an urgency to 'grab it while it's available'. Have you experienced this?

I've found one way to prevent panic buying is to collect images of garments you love and form them into a portfolio, or scrapbook. If you're like me, you suffer from simple complications that hinder the creation of your own elegant hair-do. When you were growing up, you loved doing your doll's hair, but you couldn't get the same perspective and control on your own head. Unlike you, your doll's face seemed to suit any style. Your sisters didn't like having their hair done, and you didn't know anyone else whose hair you could practice on or who wanted to practice on you.

Well, girls, I say thank God for the internet and YouTube, because there is help at hand. You'll still need to practice, assisted by a dash of patience and a pinch of upper arm stamina, but hopefully this post will encourage you to have another go at arranging your own up-do.

If you're not in need of a mass of artificial curls, provide yourself with simple tools like skinny* hairties (clear or coordinated with your hair), bobby pins (hair grips), hair spray, and a fine-tooth tail comb--use the teeth to get that smooth, shiny look, and the tail for precise partings and shaping scoops, waves, and curls.

*Skinny hairties are less visible. If you have strong hair, try using 2 or 3 on top of each other, or find a sturdier elastic.

Don't panic if this sounds complex. I had no idea why anyone would arm themselves with such a dangerous looking comb until I started watching YouTube hairstyling videos. It doesn't matter what form of study you apply yourself to, if you have a good teacher, learning becomes easy and fun. I'm now going to introduce you to a few such teachers and let them welcome you to the adventure of styling your own hair.

Parisian hair model Lilith Moon demonstrates how to create hairstyles you'll love. She's enchanting to watch (with a fascinating English accent), her YouTube tutorials are easy to follow, and her choice of backing tracks are inobtrusive. Here are two samples.

If you do need a mass of curls for that Pride and Prejudice look, Lilith provides how-to-curl tutorials using a variety of equipment, or you can simply braid your wet hair after washing it. Undo the braids when they're dry and you'll have a mass of waves that with little coaxing will make curls for you. Torrin Paige uses this method in her Regency Ribbon tutorial here.

Nobody expects you to look like you've just stepped off the set of Sense and Sensibility. For one thing, those actresses never do their own hair. Does creating your own glamour-do still seems improbable? Despite all this access to knowledge, I'd still rather someone else did my hair. I'm not sure if that's an admission to laziness or just a stirring of that eternal, feminine longing to have someone brush my hair.

At the last English Country Dance in Palmerston North, I'd had a long working day so my hair was simple -- a ponytail clipped with an ivory chiffon bow. I didn't feature my photo in the subsequent posts here because I didn't think my hair helped my outfit. Perhaps it wasn't as incongruous as I thought--I haven't had any offers to improve it for the next dance!

Or maybe it's because I'm supposed to be a self-help guru and ladies figured I was doing a dowdy so I could transform myself for the next event and publish on Boutique Narelle how I did it! But don't you think a good reason for making friends with girls who enjoy dressing up is that the talented amateur hairstylists among us get to exercise their gift and we get to enjoy the result?

What it usually comes down to is knowing someone whom you can ask for help. It's rarely offered, so help yourself get help. Tell someone you have a need. If they're not able to help you, accept it gracefully and ask if they can recommend someone who can. Keep seeking and you will find.

Beg, borrow, buy, hire, or make one. Some of these girls made their gowns from furnishing fabric available from stores like Moreland Fabrics for a couple of dollars a meter. Other girls borrowed from the girls who make them.

Some wore a plain tee shirt under a regular evening gown. In several instances, the tee blended so well with the dress that I didn't realize it was there until I was editing the video footage. That's surprising, because I notice these things.

Narelle's heirloom skirt with an embroidered cotton peasant blouse with satin waist tie was a two-piece outfit that was simple, cool, and practical if not quite vintage elegance. "And the hair and feet let me down. I'll work on that for next time."

Danielle looked charming in a gown created by Charmagne.

Some girls used a straight-across camisole to fill the gap. Others pinned or tied a shawl around their shoulders. And some ladies wore everyday tidy dress. Wear whatever modest outfit you feel comfortable in, come enjoy the dance, and while you're there network with others who can help you find or create your own dream gown for the next event.

The children take a colouring break while they get up steam for the next reel.

What do I wear on my feet?
Surprisingly, the acceptable mode is whatever's comfortable. You can be elegant in dainty heeled slippers, you can be pretty and practical in ballet pumps, or you can be carefree in bare feet. Yes, it's true--many people start the evening looking proper but very soon demonstrate they'll not allow discomfort to spoil their fun.

Charmagne told me of a country dance event she attended in the USA hosted by two magnificently gowned ladies. She was astonished to glimpse tennis shoes below their hooped skirts. The ladies assured her that they had tried the trendy totter-toes look but their feet had been agony the next day. Trainers kept them comfortable all evening and most people didn't even see their feet.

This young lady was absolutely enchanting.

Where can I get gloves and a fan?
If you are attending the Palmerston North event, Charmagne will have a selection of gloves and fans available for you to borrow for the evening, but first in, first served. If you desire your own beautifully elegant accessories, try these sources.

Ask your grandmother or an older lady in your community. I've discovered that many women, even those you can't imagine being young and elegant, still have their wedding gloves tucked away somewhere.
Hunt around at garage sales.
Hire from the local play theatre or costume hire centre.
Spotlight stocks white, black, and red satin gloves of several lengths.

These one-size-fits-most wrist gloves will be fine for slender hands as well as wider. Remember, they are supposed to be a firm fit. Most gloves are made of a stretch fabric, so you shouldn't need to worry about busting seams. If you desire long gloves and have slender arms, you may have to reduce the width (with needle and thread) to prevent the top gaping above your elbow or drooping below it.

I bought 5 fans from the Lower Hutt dealer. The product price was attractive, but the postage and packaging wasn't -- they charged NZ$6 and gave the delicate fans no padding whatsoever. I recommend you check with the seller that they will be taking adequate precautions to protect your purchase.

If these auctions have expired by the time you view them, page down to the seller's name, click on it, and search their auction list for another auction of the same type. If you can't see one, make an inquiry (on any auction). They may not have got around to relisting it, or may be in the process of reordering stock.

Why would I need gloves or a fan?
The room and the dancers get very warm. Under such conditions, wafting your own private coolant on yourself is deeply satisfying. Gloves allow you to keep your perspiration to yourself. You're also protected from anyone else's generous spirit. If you don't mind hot air and sticky hands, you'll be just fine without gloves or a fan.

I asked a young lady who reminded me of Jane Bennett, "How do you manage to look as serene at supper as you did when you first arrived?" She replied sedately, "Practice."

Part of the fun of events like this is that you get to practice being feminine, looking elegant, behaving gracefully. When we hear an instrument produce beautiful music, we know it's the result of many hours of private practice and public performance. This formula applies to being a lady. Can we expect to present ourselves as a glorious melody if we don't practice?

Tripping Out with Jane Austen - English Country Dance part 1

Have you noticed the popularity of nineteenth-century dramas, our fascination with the clothes and hairstyles? They portray a dignity and feminine mystique that's lacking in our lives and we want it back. One place in New Zealand where it's allowed to flourish is an event known as the English Country Dance.

February 4th in Palmerston North was the first of such events I was free to attend. I knew I'd been missing out on a good time, but the reality of it was better than I'd dreamed. These photos were taken during that hot and happy evening, and you're invited to the next one! [See invitation below.]

It's been more than a decade since I trotted out my dancing feet. I was amazed at how quickly I felt comfortable in my first dance, and how badly I messed up my second, but this I shall blame on not hearing a crucial piece of information from caller Charmagne Smith (probably because I was busy with two cameras during in-between dances). First Corners is not the same as First Couple. Simply profound. The support and insistence of fellow dancers eventually sent me in the right direction and before the end of the second round I was assisting others.

Outfits were diverse and colourful, representing many eras and varied dedication to detail. We'll have more photographs for you to admire next week. In the meantime, get planning your own outfit, because we would love to see you there!

Don't think you have to miss out because you don't have a dress or don't live near Palmerston North. Families regularly travel from as far as Wellington, Wanganui, and Hamilton, and as you'll see in this video, ordinary day clothes are just as common as magnificent Victorian gowns. Modest Options from EziBuy Autumn Catalogue

This acrylic/wool dress gives coverage in all the right places and is feminine without being wildly frilly. Wear it with a pair of bootleg jeans or opaque tights and boots. Also available in raspberry.

This drapey tunic doesn't lend itself to solo splendour, but undergirded with bootleg trousers and a coordinating tee, you'll have a modest and pleasing outfit.

Bolero or cropped jackets are a cute fixer for sleeveless and low-neckline after-five wear, provided the jacket neckline is an improvement on the dress. This example has a hook and eye fastening at the front that looks like it will provide sufficient coverage. Remember, where there's one hook, you can add more.

Above and below are more cute toppers for trousers or below-the-knee straight skirts.

Butt, bosom, and biceps all covered. Make sure you wear smooth upholstery underneath knits like this.

If black and white looks good on you, make the most of the refined feminine detailing available at the moment. Or, take these ideas and spruce up the B/Ws you already have. Remember to give your whites a laundry inspection before you put them on the ready-to-wear rack.

This tunic may look like a modest option to top bootleg jeans or a straight skirt, but be aware that the 80s-style wide sleeves usually mean you are exposed when you lift your arms. Upon occasion a woman has done this near me and I've seen from one side of her to the other inside her shirt. If you want to wear the style, make sure you've got a close-fitting tee underneath.

Upon first sight, I thought this a dainty rebirth of the knit v-neck tee, but then I noticed that another illustration using the same tee (below) made the neckline appear lower. The only way to know is to try it on yourself. We all have different measurements in sometimes surprising locations (although what's surprising here is it's the same model), so what is modest on one lady may not be modest on another.

If you can't get to city that has an EziBuy store, for a small postal charge you get to try on anything you like in your own home -- one thing I like about that is that I can check items coordinate with my existing wardrobe! -- and you return what you don't want. If you're not sure what size you need, order one of each and send back what doesn't fit. It's quicker, cheaper, and more convenient than driving all the way to the city.

A couple of knits and ways to dress them up or fill the empty spots.

This knit tunic is acrylic/nylon/mohair/elastane with velvet tie at waist. I hope that with elastane in it the mohair and acrylic won't sag all the way to Antractica. (If you buy one, let us know if you get there.) It'll be cosy, but be aware it's not lined and yarn knits are not as dense as cotton knits. A chemise will certainly be a good idea (I've made a couple of cotton knit ones based on a $10 camisole and find them wonderfully comfy and cosy). If the neckline worries you, drape a scarf or wear a long-sleeved tee underneath. This will also help prevent any itch you might experience from the mohair. [Editor's Note: a new photo supplied by Ezibuy confirms that this neckline is not modest.]

Skirts: How to Make Them Modest

On a small income? Hands up if you know it's hard to find cheap modest skirts?

I have a friend who uses her good old Kiwi ingenuity to solve her family's skirt problems. The simple creativity behind her solution charmed me speechless. Her theory is this: If a recycled clothing mart doesn't include modest skirts on the rack, combining 2 immodest skirts equals 1 modest skirt.

There was quite a breeze blowing when I took these photos, so the skirt looks fuller than it normally would.

For a funky look, topstitch lines a centimeter or so apart, joining the two layers, then cut between the seams on the top layer only. The raw denim edges won't need much encouragement to fray like this.

She's quick to confess that not all her partnerships are successful. Every designer in the world experiences design flops, but they tend to keep it quiet. For us, with the ability to view a solid object rather than a vision of one, it's easier to judge what to adjust or change in order for a concept to work. So look and learn.

As you can see, 50/50 length doesn't work when you have such a big contrast. My recommendation is figure out the finished length you need, then work out the balance of the two layers at a ratio no greater than 2:3 or 3:4.

Some skirts don't require a complete makeover, just a small one. B has a knack for this.

I'm particularly delighted by her solution for the knee-high back vent. B and her sister have loved this skirt to bits.

B's advice for kick-pleat insertions is to make sure that trims will stretch along with the fabric. I.e. use stretch lace and sew with a stretch stitch.

Isn't it brilliant? I almost want to go out and buy an immodest skirt just so I can have one of these myself!

B has an answer for skirts that have been damaged, perhaps an iron burn, a barbed wire rip, or a stain. Cover it up with an applique or, as below, cut out the damaged part and insert an embroidered extension.

The decorative band also works for hiding a join when you add an extension to the hem, as I've done below.

B's latest design combines the ever popular denim with the current stripe delight trend. The denim skirt has been cut into strips or shapes and these shapes are stitched on top of the striped skirt. The top portion of the striped skirt (the part above the stripes you see in the illustrations) was then removed and the raw edges (inside) neatened.

To make neat edges, place right side of denim onto right side of striped skirt. Stitch. Fold denim down over seam and press. To make frayed edge, top stitch and then hassle the raw edges.

Apparently Broomstick is the new Mermaid. The row of stars you see below the images are customer ratings. If you find a garment you like, it's helpful to rate and comment so other shoppers looking for modest clothing know that garment is a good choice.

This yoked denim skirt has been voted by shoppers as the favourite skirt style from Chadwicks.

It has a back vent. Greatly will I applaud the store that provides a backview of such features. Chadwicks isn't one of them. If you see a skirt you like but are in doubt as to whether the back has a vent or, if it does, whether it will be modest, there is a solution. No, I don't mean sew up the vent. I've tried that twice, with hilarious and embarassing results.

If a garment has a vent, it's usually because the manufacturer didn't include enough fullness for easy movement. You need the extra give that the vent allows. Next post we'll provide images of a denim skirt back vent that its owner filled with fabric, creating a pretty pleat without loss of movement.

I checked the details on the Trapunto Skirt. It doesn't have a vent. Yay!

How to be Modest AND Comfortable in the Heat

My home isn't air-conditioned. February's heat is upon us with unusual intensity and there's only one thing I can write about -- practical ways to be modest and comfortable in the heat.

When the thermostat rises, much of the western world has one urge (apart from seeking an air-conditioned or watery spot) and that is to strip off. If you're reading this then that probably isn't an option for you. So how do you stay covered but not feel ill from the lack of air circulating over the surface of your skin?

I've spent considerable time creating a temperature-appropriate wardrobe. Each summer I'll have two or three outfits and wear-and-wash them continuously in the few weeks of real heat that our climate usually offers. The outfits don't tend to last more than a season or two, and I'm perennially struggling to keep pace with the current season, but nevertheless, sewing my own heat survival kit allows me to be comfortable and modest. Here's what I've learned.

From long sleeves to short in a jiffy.

In the heat, this cotton top (design by BN) is brilliant and beautiful.

Eschew close-fitting garments.
Avoid knit fabrics, which are designed to cling. Go for cotton weaves.
Look for clothing design that lends itself to modesty in a single garment.


The under-bust blouse seam allows for the addition of an inset panel. From inside, the piece looks like the front half of a singlet crop-top.

1. Eschew close-fitting garments. This includes style and fabric. A close-fitting style will enhance the garment's perspiration-display abilities. Figure-hugging fabrics don't allow for air to pass over the surface of your skin. Have you thought of going without a bra during the worst of the heat? My mother and I do and oh, what relief!

Does that shock you? A few weeks out of harnass won't turn you into a sag bag. However, you can't just drop the bra and expect to be modest while wearing t-shirts. You need to apply Points 2 and 3, below.

2. Avoid knits. Go for cotton weaves. Cotton holds its shape, is absorbant, and if you choose the right weight and print, is opaque (meaning you can't see through it).

If you're thinking, "But I don't want to iron in the heat!" my reply is, I don't iron any of the garments you see in this post. They're washed with a slow or medium spin, then hung on an indoor rack or hanger (no peg marks!), with a judicious tug here and there to prevent creasing as they dry. These cottons are fairly crease-resistant and I don't mind starting the day with a slightly crumpled look -- after all, as soon as the fabric gets between me and a seat it'll crease anyway.

Does this outfit look warm to you? It's not. The only concession I need to make for extreme heat is to roll the cuffs up. See below for why it's so comfortable.

This patch pocket is ornamental. Modesty is obtained from two layers of fabric used at the front, forming a lining for the transparent broderie anglaise.

The back is one layer of fabric.

I've pulled the shirt against my body so you can see the join where two-layered front meets one-layered back.

It's not normally as noticable as in that photo, and probably you wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't pointed it out, but next time I do this pattern I'll make sure I have enough fabric to double the back as well as the front.

3. Design elements such as linings, bodice inset panels, or breast patch pockets mean you can be modest without needing another layer underneath. On a very hot day, do you know the comfort of a loose-fitting cotton top over a cotton-lined cotton skirt with nothing else underneath? Sweat moistens your clothing, air passes through it, evaporation occurs, and voila, you have your own cooling tent operating with you inside it. (See The Great Shirt Hunt for more details.)

Three more things you need to know:

Nobody else needs to know you're not wearing underlayers today. Be modest in manners as well as appearance.
Loose doesn't have to mean shapeless. My tops are loosely tailored using darts or ties so they look attractive but maintain wearability.
If you don't live in a perpetual heat zone, you may need to adjust to the concept of trickling perspiration. It's not a bad thing if you're appropriately attired. Get into the mindset (as you did to dressing modestly) and you can be comfortable!

While stores go crazy with the roses and ribbon, chocolate hearts, and cuddly bears associated with Valentines Day, we pay homage to love that begins with vows of faithfulness and through the years remains stedfast.

This happens when a man and a woman are individually 100% committed to nurturing their marriage, no matter the provocation. Do you know a couple like this? They may be hard to find, but they do exist, and I'm so thankful to the Lord for their example.

Here's a quick solution for the next time your top needs some extra fabric in a hurry. Maybe you need to cover your upper arms, shoulders, and back for modesty, or to protect your skin from sunburn. To do so, all you need it a shawl or wide scarf.

I take most of my own photos. Fashion shoots as both model and photographer tend to be tedious...back and forth from the camera, setting the delay switch, posing, going back to check the result...so I'm delighted to have discovered a way that simplifies this. The following images were shot as video with photo stills captured from that. You won't get the image quality of a photograph, but hopefully you'll enjoy the 'how-to' sequences that are thus enabled.

This lightweight scarf stuffs easily into my handbag. When I find my t-shirted self exposed to the sun for too long, I can whip out the scarf, drape and tie, and continue in the sun with peace of mind.

The trick will also work if you need to cover your front. Perhaps you have a low cut top, or need sun protection above your usual neckline.

Reverse the tie sequence, starting by draping the scarf across your chest, loop over behind and under your arms and tie at the front. Tie again for additional security.

My sister brought her young family to visit for a few days. In his bedtime prayer, 3-year-old Scotty thanked God that he got to sit next to Aunty Narelle at the table and that she was wearing a blue suit. I was tickled pink to know he approved of my appearance.

Joshua, Scotty, and Elizabeth help Aunty Narelle sing. Narelle is wearing what she now thinks of as her Scotty Suit.

My father appreciates that I present myself in a modest, feminine manner. He's proud of my wholesome womanliness. I like knowing I please him.

The shoes were a gift to herself, subsidized by Mum. Have you noticed that pretty footwear makes even a plain outfit charming?

If you're thinking that this looks like she needs to invite her shirt down to meet her skirt, you'd be right. Between stretch fabrics and health issues, Narelle struggles to keep her ensembles all together. Hanging loose is good for her wellbeing but not her wardrobe!

Flowers in Your Hair, part 2

Wild or garden flowers may be out of season or out of reach for you, but don't despair. The imitation variety are attractive and generally inexpensive. Flowers in your hair in winter have a special power. It's as though they puff out their colour and sweetness to the world's grey frigidity, bringing smiles, defying gloom.

Jyoti and Narelle

Jyoti prepared a magnificent feast for Narelle's birthday party. With little time to primp once the food was ready, a flower on a small crocodile clip was the perfect ornament. Along with her beautiful smile.

Narelle wore her hair up (below) on Christmas Day, using a butterfly clip and two alligator clips to pin it up in sections, the last clip hidden by an adaptable red rose she found in the $2 shop the day before -- it can be fastened by elastic hairtie, small crocodile clip, or brooch pin.
